About the Instructor:
Tom began his journey with woodturning about 6 years ago and has been passionately making piles of sawdust ever since. As an academic scientist (currently a professor at the IU School of Medicine), he realized that he needed to exercise the other side of his brain and found a woodturning teacher in Durham. Since then, he loves the meditative experience of watching fine streams of sawdust fly off the lathe. He learned early on from his teacher that there are no mistakes in woodturning – just opportunities for design change. He enjoys making a wide range of things on the lathe, including bowls, pens, lamps and candlesticks. Despite spending a lot of time with his research group at IU, he calls Durham his home. He loves spending time with his family, running and playing pickleball.
